Donald Trump’s delayed engagement with critical intelligence briefings amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran is sparking major concern, especially from White House veteran April Ryan, who warned that the president is dangerously unprepared for a potential global conflict.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” on Saturday, Ryan didn’t hold back, calling out what she described as the “elephant in the room” regarding Trump’s lack of readiness as he deliberates on how the U.S. should respond to the worsening crisis in the Middle East.
“Think about this, though and you guys hit on it and it’s the elephant in the conversation in the room, forgive the pun –but he’s just now starting to get intelligence,” Ryan told the show’s co-hosts.
She revealed that Trump only began receiving consistent daily briefings as of Thursday, despite the Israel-Iran situation intensifying. “We’re seeing intelligence, consistent briefings. And before that, how often was the president getting briefed, right?” she asked.
“He’s just once a week. Was it bullet points? Was it a show and tell? What was it? Was it pictorial?” Ryan contrasted Trump’s sporadic briefings with the long-established presidential tradition of receiving comprehensive daily intelligence updates in written form.
“Every day presidents used to get a book, before this president, they used to get a book basically of what’s going on around the world,” she noted. “And now he’s playing catch-up. He’s doing the quick notes. This is not that moment to do quick notes.”
The mounting tension in the Middle East already teetering on the edge of full-scale war makes Trump’s lack of preparation all the more alarming to intelligence experts and senior advisors within his administration, some of whom, according to reports, are increasingly frustrated by his casual approach to national security.
In the face of a two-week delay before deciding how the U.S. will respond to Iran, critics argue that Trump’s slow start and disengagement from the daily intelligence process could have serious global consequences.
As April Ryan put it bluntly, “This is not that moment to do quick notes.”
