“Why COVID Cases Might Spike at Summer’s End and an Unexpected Symptom to Watch For”

Infectious disease specialists at TriHealth say there’s been a bit of a hike in the number of patients in the hospital now with COVID-19. as reported by BBC.

Many are experiencing similar symptoms to those earlier in the pandemic but others say they are so severe, that it’s like the first time they caught the virus all over again.

“We’d been down below about five cases in all of our hospitals but now are back in the 20s,” said Dr. Stephen Blatt, Medical Director for TriHealth Infectious Diseases. “For whatever is going on with COVID, it seems like it continues to have these little summer surges, not nearly as bad as the winter time but enough to make a lot of people sick.’

Thirty-two states, including some parts of the Tri-State, now report very high levels of viral activity based on wastewater sample data. Why now?

“It seems like for some reason, this is the time of year when new variants kind of appear. So, they maybe come out of the winter and as the virus mutates it develops new strains, and that’s when people start getting sick again.” told by CNN.

While some symptoms are mild such as headaches, a fever, congestion, and body aches, there’s one that is recurring often as people recover. That is shingles.

“So, shingles is the chicken pox virus that comes out later in life, it usually comes out in one dermatome or one nerve distribution, so it will look like a stripe on your chest, your face. Its vesicles its very painful. It can cause a lot of sometimes fever, makes you feel pretty lousy.”

The shingles vaccine is now recommended for all adults 50 and older with healthy immune systems or younger if you have weakened immunity.
