The Utica Police Department has released bodycam footage from the night 13-year-old Nyah Mway was shot and killed by police.
The footage, now available on the department’s YouTube channel, consists of six separate videos of varying lengths. The shortest video is 2:27 minutes, while the longest is 23:30 minutes. according to USA Today.
Police also released photos of the pellet gun Nyah allegedly had when he was shot by officers.
“As always, we are committed to transparency and earning the public’s trust in our investigations,” the Utica Police Department said in a Saturday statement regarding the officer-involved shooting. “As much information as allowable will be released during this process.”
Authorities stated that officers were conducting a pedestrian stop of two juveniles around 10:18 p.m. on Friday, June 28, in the 900 block of Shaw Street. One of the juveniles, Nyah, fled from the police, displaying what appeared to be a handgun during the chase.
The police recovered a replica GLOCK 17 handgun, later determined to be a pellet gun.
Nyah was taken to Wynn Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Bodycam Footage Details
The bodycam footage is from three officers: Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citrini, according to the released videos and the Utica Police Department’s online roster.
The footage begins as the officers approach Nyah and the other juvenile, who is on a bicycle. Patterson is shown in the footage explaining that they were being stopped because one teen was riding the bike on the road, while Nyah was walking nearby. report from AP News.
Initially, Nyah had his hands up but ran away when officers asked if they could pat him down to check for weapons. Patterson and Husnay chased after Nyah, with Patterson eventually taking him down after a short pursuit. Officers can be heard shouting, “He’s got a gun.”
Husnay, with his gun drawn, appeared to shoot Nyah while he was on the ground, as seen in the bodycam footage. “It was one shot,” Husnay can be heard saying in the released footage. “It was me.”
Husnay joined the Utica Police Department in May 2018, according to documentation on the department’s website.
All three officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
